The Calm
I have been remiss in writing reviews for Kaskade's albums. So here is a start. You may be wondering why I am starting with "The Calm", when Kaskade has had so many singles, and the Love Mysterious album come out since the release of this album. The reason is, I love this album, it is so diverse, and has more of a Late Night Alumni (LNA) touch that I love. The reason for this is that Kaskade released this album through his own label "Quiet City Records", and could release whatever he wanted. There were no executives to answer to about what type of sound to go for, etc.
This album is a little more laid back than some of Kaskade's other albums and as I mentioned before is more in the vain of LNA, in fact Becky Jean Williams (from LNA, of course) sings three of the songs on the album. Kaskade teamed up with many of the same people that have made his other albums such a success, including Finn Bjarnson, to give the album a great sound.
1. Wink of an Eye: this is one of my favorite songs on the album. It is a haunting song sung by Becky Jean Williams and has the most LNA feel of any of the songs. I love the guitar work, and it looks like a lot of work went into this with guitar work being done by Rich Dixon, Scott Wiley, and Finn Bjarnson.
2. Heart Attack: Is sung by fourfeet, and has a groovy sound that reminds me of "Gonna make it".
3. McCammon: A jazzy instrumental, filled with bass, of the genre of songs that sound as if chill house went back to 40's, even with the old sound of vinyl. This is a great instrumental.
4. Right Dream: Another great song on the album sung by Becky Jean Williams. Love the piano, guitar, lyrics. It is also of the LNA feel.
5. Soft Upon the Lips: Is sung by Haley Gibby (of Summer of Space). I love this song! I am so excited for Summer of Space! This song is so chill, relaxing, and is like a metaphysical journey in and of itself.
6. Remembering Rufus: This is a great instrumental as well and has a great beat.
7. Stay This: Becky Jean Williams sings another great chill song. A poignant song, with some great lyrics.
8. Nobody Else: What is a Kaskade album without a song sung by Finn Bjarnson? It is a great song that feels like the Kaskade in In the Moment.
9: Words and Melody: This is my favorite song on the album: The lyrics are incredible, the music is great, the guitar is great, and the lyrics by Marcus Bentley are great. It has a strong acoustic feel to it, and, as you can tell I just love it.
10. Surrender: Will probably be many people's favorite song on the album. With beautiful vocals by Latrice Barnett, incredible string arrangements by John Hancock, and beautiful violin work by Aaron Ashton.
Overall it is a great album, and definitely worth picking up. Especially for any fan of Late Night Alumni or Summer of Space.
